The second biggest night of the year?
And what a night it was! Seb's medieval sleepover - a yearlong if not life-long goal achieved!! 3 friends came over and made merry; two even slept over (it was touch and go as to whether any would feel comfortable to do so). Sebastian was an archer, his father a jester, and Zack was Robin Hood (in an outfit his Grandma had made his own dad as a boy). Jack was a king, while poor Sophie wanted to be a horse (!) but her mother failed to find the time to make a costume so she dressed herself. At least she wasn't a princess...
There was a medieval feast by lanterns' light. Roast chicken and veggies on a bread plate - no cutlery allowed. They drank their milk, water or juice from clay goblets which Italian schoolchildren had made (it's a long but lovely story) strung around their necks with jute - and only one dripped.
And then the cake. A purple crown studded with jewels. A bit lopsided but fantastic if I do say so myself. She Takes the Cake - eat your cake out! It got rave reviews for presentation and taste. It all came about thanks to an Australian colleague who saw our rainbow cake for Carrie and then started raving about the Australian Women's Weekly's birthday cake book. She very kindly bought one and posted it to me! It arrived just in time for drooling to start and except for minor last minute panic about where to get silver balls, it was so easy to do. (Sophie has upped the ante and asked for a carousel cake...).
There was lots of playmobil playtime, chess, shield-making, dragon-taming and a movie (ok, we allowed popcorn). They didn't go to bed til midnight (and up at 6)...
Carrie outdid herself again. This time with a 6 foot dragon which the children had helped to make but also the most wonderful spread-winged hawk made from papier-mache, mounted on a 'chainmailed' glove for a falconer costume. Seb adores it and even took it to ballet today. It is truly spectacular.
