A little bit of London

So if you spend a long weekend in New York, you say that you took a bite of the Big Apple.
What's the equivalent for London?

John Lewis's kitchen department comes through again

Bit yellowy but two sets of carvings at the Tate Modern that left an impression on me.

Couple of people asked if we ate well, and while we did have a couple of good meals, we realised that we eat as well (and more cheaply) in rural France or downtown Toronto, so when in London we want to focus our time and money on the performances (a dance performance centred in Mohamed Ali's life with Parkinson's anyone and / or the play Mojo?) and exhibitions that don't come to Toronto, let alone rural France!

Yummy and clever

Look what my clever sister whipped up for us - a delicious lentil salad with fresh fruit initials.

Tromping through a soggy January

Still enjoying our family hikes and hope to get some other children and families to join us next month.

Time well spent

There he was, across the gallery, observing up close the brush strokes of a Paul Klee painting, the masses swirling around him. The modern European metrosexual - aubergine cords, fitted, dark blue shirt with a subtle diamond pattern, chelsea boots, trimmed beard. I walked on and over and told him that 21 years of grooming tips had paid off.

He chuckled and remarked that 21 years of his fashion advice meant that his lady love proudly wore her new Gore-tex jacket in the midst of the Tate Modern. I laughed loud and hard.

Love in its third decade.

The ties that bind and set us free to grow

As you all know, reading aloud with our children is one of our favourite pastimes. First us reading to them, then the big one to the little one and now her to us. It went so smoothly (even with the French thrown in) that about 15 months ago, I declared them both "readers", and tick literacy off the parenting to-do list.

One of the greatest treats of parenting so far has been listening to others - special 'aunties', relatives, family friends - cuddle up and read to the children, asking them questions and talking to them about what is happening in the story. I will never forget watching my father-in-law grow as a reader over those first 3 years or so of Sebastian's life. He read aloud more smoothly, took on characters' voices with gusto, anticipated what was coming next (OK, they were books for pre-schoolers but it's still a skill of a good oral reader). It was down right endearing and Seb - and his parents - loved him for it.

So here is a new challenge: recent research shows that children blossom not only when they are read to but also when they hear family tales - repeatedly. Preteens (and we are moving there rapidly, folks) who discuss their days and hear family tales have stronger sense of self and higher self-esteem.

Now, don't go to town embarrassing us but do spin a good yarn to S&S when you can.

Our new family 'toy'

A much-appreciated appliance thanks to Mark, Sarah and the cousins' generosity. Now we are considering one for Canada!

Glorious

Why does this man rarely smile in pictures? He has the most glorious smile, complete with twinkly blue eyes.

New Year's Day celebrations

Swathed in cuddly clean pyjamas, we opened our New Year's presents to each other, played tennis in the sunshine, teamed up with some new board games and had another feast! To be honest, it was a relief not to have to juggle our annual Open House too, and besides 9 of us in the house felt like a party anyway.

Squiring our visitors into the New Year

We were thrilled to meet in Paris and then host in the Dordogne some long and dear friends to all in our family.

Seb oversaw Neil's grooming technique

They took the ponies for a walk in the woods

and everyone was pleased

New Year's Eve was a big knees-up: huge feast, followed by the annual New Year's eve pyjamas, and a family disco party.

Despite knowing its content, the kids are always thrilled to open the annual PJ package
Seb's NYE outfit
with the added leopard PJs as cape
Sophie's cuddly number

Our dance-floor decorations complete with non-disco ball
Where many moved and grooved (including 2 crazy moms)

Ringing in the New Year (11 is the new midnight)
the parental paparazzi
Can't you see them taking the dance clubs by storm in 12 years!

especially once she has grown into those shoes!

Relaxing through January

A great way to spend a January evening - stepping into a hot bath filled with bath salts Sophie gave her parents, and a good detective novel.

Getting that tourist spot 'selfie'

Not a good one of us or the Eiffel Tower
umm, where's the tower? (but that is a good shot of our mulled wine)

Guess this one will do!

Last days of Paris (for now!)

The Parisian house I covet (except it's government offices, so perhaps better to say I want the job that lands you here)

Enjoying some wonderful galettes, cider and hot chocolate
