The ties that bind and set us free to grow

As you all know, reading aloud with our children is one of our favourite pastimes. First us reading to them, then the big one to the little one and now her to us. It went so smoothly (even with the French thrown in) that about 15 months ago, I declared them both "readers", and tick literacy off the parenting to-do list.

One of the greatest treats of parenting so far has been listening to others - special 'aunties', relatives, family friends - cuddle up and read to the children, asking them questions and talking to them about what is happening in the story. I will never forget watching my father-in-law grow as a reader over those first 3 years or so of Sebastian's life. He read aloud more smoothly, took on characters' voices with gusto, anticipated what was coming next (OK, they were books for pre-schoolers but it's still a skill of a good oral reader). It was down right endearing and Seb - and his parents - loved him for it.

So here is a new challenge: recent research shows that children blossom not only when they are read to but also when they hear family tales - repeatedly. Preteens (and we are moving there rapidly, folks) who discuss their days and hear family tales have stronger sense of self and higher self-esteem.

Now, don't go to town embarrassing us but do spin a good yarn to S&S when you can.
