A couple of days ago, these parents realised that both children were aware that Santa Claus doesn't exist but that each was trying to fake it for the other's sake. We weren't quite sure how to set matters straight sensitively, until this conversation yesterday:
Me: So Pere Noel is coming to school tomorrow?
Sophie: Just a man dressed as him.
I glance at their dad.
Seb: because the real one is busy with his elves.
Me: ummm
Their dad: Seb...
Seb: Well, he is.
Me: [catching his eye] Sophie knows that Santa isn't real.
Seb: Oh [looking relieved and disappointed, if that's possible]
Me: [continuing in a sensitive voice, b/c I think our eldest clings to the notion of Santa more than his sister] So what do you think "Santa" is all about?
Seb: Getting kids to behave before Christmas...

Santa's just doing his job! Funny thing is, I believed in Santa until ten years old! That could have been because my Aunt Olga said she'd just seen Santa's sleigh pass by her window. Aunt Olga, (Mom's sister) lived near Rogers Road and Dufferin Street, and we were on Walnut Avenue near King Street. I rushed to the window, waiting, and swore I saw that sleigh outside our window.
(I don't know what I saw, but I also found it hard to not believe!
