It's a Lego world

Sebastian has an interesting take on the business side of Lego (Danish contraction for play well, didn'cha know).

He believes that they have "ripped off" the ideas of Playmobil (where his heart - and any disposable cash - truly lie) but he does enjoy playing with it and was awfully upset when his collection was confiscated over the summer. He is earning it back a little at a time (not quite block by block; I am not that cruel). And I am sure one of the Legoland theme parks would rock his world.

In fact, with no whiff of split loyalties, he has asked for one of the company's new build-it yourself board games this year and about 8 items of Playmobil rescue collections.

I grew up loving Lego. As an adult, I thought I was mad at Lego for many things, not the least of which what I thought was selling out by making brand-specific pieces (for Star Wars, etc). But, no matter what the company does, the original product remains excellent, and an amazing tool for Henry's imagination. He took home a book from the library the Dictionary of Star Wars Lego. Rather than being offended by not having the official pieces and sets, it has given him a creative challenge -- to make cooler things than he sees in this book.

Don't get me started on Playmobile.... I have never seen it played with (despite the intense yearning for it when it's on the store shelf) for longer than a minute at the time. There is so little room for imagination.

You haven't spent time with our kids recently (too true, by the way). They will spend ages at a time dreaming up scenarios for their Playmobil playmates.

When I drag myself out of bed on Sunday mornings - having had a 1/4 ear open for 90 minutes to the play dialogue in the playroom - I have to tiptoe through a universe of adventure just to get to the loo. (From much experience, I would argue that Playmobil are rounder and thus less jagged to step on than Lego). Last Sunday morning, it was all about singing raccoons.

I remembered this post last night as Jane and Henry played for an hour with their box of nearly forgotten Playmobile stuff.

Shows what I know.
