Brighton – our incredible British base!

Last Friday, we picked up our hire car and headed straight to the Eardleys, where we received cake and hugs. And then onwards to the Brighton cousins for a fine spread as multiple generations gathered for the weekend.

Saturday was just about fair enough for a picnic, so we headed to lovely Firl again and watched the local cricket. I nipped into the laines and beyond for some shopping. Though I made it all the way to M&S, I didn’t quite have the energy to do any trying on… The rest were busy playing banana boats, I am told. That night, we were joined by John’s two eldest and were all treated to the best fish and chips of the year. Then the younger cousins headed off to a party and the clubs.

But the best of the relatives days was Sunday. What had started as a lunch for family & friends in Brighton turned into a couple of out of towners joining us, and lovely D&P driving down and all the younger cousins and 2 of their cousins. And the piece de resistance - at the last moment, we found out that Sophie's school mate / rock-climbing pal Julius was in London with his Nana and so they came down! So our dear Brighton cousins kindly hosted 22 of us for lunch – and what a lunch! We brought some cheese and dried sausage from Issigeac market but they poached salmon and made quiches and tossed up salads and whipped up meringues. Our elders laid on some fizz – and though the weather just couldn’t make up its mind – we had the most delightful time celebrating 50 & 50 with this crowd! And I finally got to use some of Emma's brilliant bunting.

The 11 / 12 year olds hang out - and then went on a walking tour of Brighton led by Ava.

Lovely Jean

It's just not a proper Issigeac sojourn without spending some time with our friend Jean.We usually dine at their place once, and they come for pizza & salad on a Thursday evening. Jean pops in when she does errands in le petit village and then we often go out together for a day trip.

Hiking to Spain - Day 1

You can follow along with me because I am not fit and brave enough to hike 15 kms, gaining 900m in elevation and walk 25,000 steps. So impressed with them all.

Here's the whole journey

The stunning Pyrenees
Mountains everywhere
My mountain goats spotted mountain goats
Drinking in the fresh, thin air
The younger siblings hung together
A well-deserved, hearty meal at the Spanish refugio

We love visitors

Our dear friends K Cal and co were with us for a few days. They suffered through the CANICULE with us all. They are my new food tourist heroes; first, eldest child has severe food allergies but can avoid them with care; BUT one adult is intolerant of all dairy (except butter - which I learnt is a substantial component in her diet); 2nd adult is deathly allergic to wine. And they came to France! And ate well.

We did Lascaux (4) and the night market thing and the chateau thing and our market thing and eat quietly in the courtyard late at night thing. The bakeries and frozen food shop, the hyper-march; Casti swimming pool. So just a wonderful mix of high tourist and "how do the French live?" Oh and a dance party. Go tot have a midnight dance party just as the storm of the year rolls in - thundering overhead all night and almost flooding the house. It did knock out power for 5 hours.
