Camping - Bon Echo style

After the beachy, resort vibe of the Pinery, we got back to our woodsy roots. Camping on the Canadian Shield and doing a 10+ km trail

The mozzies were pretty bad

as I said, the mozzies were pretty bad

the poisonous mushrooms were pretty great

Hiking is a great time to talk with our kids

Camping - Pinery style

The Pinery provincial park really is lovely - sunsets over Lake Huron, bodysurfing, windstorms, bike trails and good friends. Sure the neighbours were rowdy on the first 2 nights but all in all, it made for a 2nd marvellous visit.

look who got the wetsuit

Grandparent Camp 2015 - Part 2

So while the kids were sailing, visiting PEI and having a grand old time with their New Brunswick relatives, their dear parents were unpacking and buying furniture and installing said furniture on hot afternoons...

Swallows and Amazons - part 1

Back in the early spring, gazing over the massive expanse of Lake Ontario, my clever father-in-law mentioned how great it would be for the kids to learn to sail. We drove past Toronto's yacht club and I thought "oh ya, that will never happen. It's got to cost a bomb."  But then I had a brainwave: Why not learn to sail in New Brunswick where things like that are much less expensive?

Fast forward several months, and our youngsters show up for 2 weeks of daily sailing camp last week. They were a bit unnerved that first day but have taken to it like ducks to _____ (fill in the blank).  It's a small group of children with a wide range of experience; they sail small boats, which can be handled solo (which Seb did briefly on his 2nd day!) or squeeze in 3 kids. Sophie is the 2nd youngest. Part of the fun was an "adventure day", when they all sailed off as a flotilla to a nearby island. There they had their packed lunches and explored; not quite Swallows and Amazons but close. As you can all imagine, Sebastian is asking whether he can return to the waters next year.

Gramps & Nana have kitted them out with sunglasses, sunglasses holders, lifejackets and better footwear. Even better, they dutifully make them a yummy packed lunch and drive them in every morning and then pick them up (quite tired) every afternoon. George is becoming very friendly with the boating club's commodore!
